About Jose Pena
Jose Pena debuted on June 1, 1969 with the Reds and struck out three batters in his five innings that season. His 1970 Topps card, #523 from the fifth series, pictures him with the Dodgers. He worked entirely in relief for Los Angeles that year and collected one hit in eight at-bats.
Jose Pena Gutierrez, born December 3, 1942 in Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua, Mexico, was a right-handed pitcher who reached the majors with the Cincinnati Reds in 1969 before finishing his career with the Los Angeles Dodgers from 1970 through 1972. Standing 6-foot-2 and throwing and batting right-handed, he worked out of the bullpen across his four big-league seasons, posting a career mark of 7-4 with a 4.97 ERA and five saves. Away from the majors, Pena built a long career in the Mexican Pacific League, pitching for 22 winter seasons with clubs including the Caneros de Los Mochis, Naranjeros de Hermosillo, Venados de Mazatlan, Algodoneros de Guasave, Mayos de Navojoa and Ostioneros de Guaymas. In February 2025, a committee of journalists named him a pitcher on the Mexican League Centennial All-Time Team.
