1970 Topps #298 Ken Henderson

About Ken Henderson
Henderson pulled a hamstring playing winter ball in Puerto Rico and began 1969 on the disabled list, finishing at .225 with six home runs in 113 games as the Giants ended three games behind Atlanta. Card #298, from the third series of 1970 Topps, lists him with San Francisco. In 1970 he scored 104 runs, walked 88 times and stole 20 bases in 23 tries, the best success rate in the National League.
Ken Henderson was a switch-hitting outfielder for seven major-league clubs from 1965 to 1980, beginning with San Francisco and ending with the Chicago Cubs. Raised near San Diego, he followed his father Joseph, a Navy ballplayer who became a scout, into baseball. His brothers Rob and Joe also signed with the Giants. Scouts and writers compared Henderson to Willie Mays, an expectation he often considered unfair. He hit .294 with 17 home runs and 88 RBIs in 148 games in 1970. After San Francisco, he played for the White Sox, Braves, Rangers, Mets, Reds and Cubs, finishing with 1,168 hits, 122 home runs and a .257 average. He later worked in sales and marketing, becoming a vice president at Staples. In 2010 he returned to the Giants as a director of sales.
