1970 Topps #600 Willie Mays

About Willie Mays
New manager Clyde King moved Mays into the leadoff spot in 1969 because he was hitting fewer home runs, a change Mays privately chafed at. A July 29 collision with catcher Randy Hundley hurt his knee and cost him several games, and on September 22 he hit his 600th home run. He finished at .283 with 13 home runs in 117 games and was named to the All-Star team. Card #600, a sixth-series issue, shows him with San Francisco.
Willie Howard Mays Jr. (1931-2024), the Say Hey Kid, played 23 major league seasons (1948 in the Negro American League, then 1951-1952 and 1954-1973), almost all of them in center field for the New York and San Francisco Giants. New York writers hung the nickname on him during his rookie year for the greeting he used in place of hello, though which writer coined it has been argued over ever since. Mays reached the Giants in 1951 out of the Negro American League's Birmingham Black Barons and won Rookie of the Year, then lost most of two seasons to the Army. He returned in 1954 to take the batting title at .345, the National League Most Valuable Player award and a World Series title. In Game One of that Series he made his over-the-shoulder catch of Vic Wertz's drive. He moved west with the club in 1958 and won a second MVP in 1965. Across his career he led the National League in home runs four times, won twelve consecutive Gold Gloves from 1957 through 1968 and was an All-Star in 20 seasons. He finished with 660 home runs, third in history when he retired, and was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1979 on the first ballot with 94.7 percent of the vote.
