About Doug Rader

Rader's bat dropped off in 1971, when he hit 12 home runs, well below the 25 of the year before. He batted .244 with 56 RBI in 135 games, all of them at third base. His glove did not slip, and he won his second straight Gold Glove. Topps placed him at #425, a fourth-series card with the Astros.

Doug Rader was a third baseman who built his reputation on defense. Signed by the Houston Astros as an undrafted free agent out of Bloomington, Illinois, he reached the majors in 1967 and became Houston's everyday third baseman the following year. Over an eleven-year career split between the Astros, San Diego Padres, and Toronto Blue Jays, he hit 155 home runs and drove in 722 runs. He won five consecutive Gold Glove Awards at third base from 1970 through 1974. Nicknamed "the Red Rooster" for the thick red hair under his cap, he later moved into coaching and managing, leading the Texas Rangers, Chicago White Sox, and California Angels between 1983 and 1991 after retiring as a player in 1978.
