About Chris Cannizzaro

Stuck in a hotel elevator on the Padres' March 1970 exhibition trip to Mexico City, Cannizzaro and coach Roger Craig crawled through an escape hatch to find help. He hit .435 that spring while Bob Barton, acquired to platoon with him, was out with a forearm injury. A 13-game hitting streak began May 8, and he was hitting .328 on July 7. San Diego sent him to the Cubs in May 1971 for Garry Jestadt. His Padres card, #426, belongs to the fourth series.

Chris Cannizzaro caught for six major league clubs across 13 seasons from 1960 through 1974, appearing in 740 games. St. Louis signed him out of San Leandro High School in 1956; his later teams were the Mets, Pirates, Padres, Cubs and Dodgers. With New York, he led the majors in caught-stealing percentage in 1962 and 1965. He caught San Diego's first game, a 2-1 win over Houston on April 8, 1969, and became the Padres' first All-Star. He finished with a .235 average, 18 home runs and 169 RBI. Cannizzaro coached Atlanta's bullpen from 1976 through 1978, then managed Salinas and Redwood in the Angels' California League system. He later coached at high school and college levels and died in San Diego on December 29, 2016.
