1971 Topps #389 Ed Brinkman

About Ed Brinkman
Brinkman learned of the October 9, 1970 trade to Detroit from Darold Knowles, who heard it on the radio; he initially took the call as a joke. He had batted .262 and led American League shortstops in putouts and assists that season. In 1971 he played 56 consecutive games at shortstop without an error. His Tigers card, #389, came in the third series.
Ed Brinkman played shortstop for Washington and Detroit during a 15-season major league career that produced 1,355 hits and a .224 average. A Western Hills High School teammate of Pete Rose in Cincinnati, he signed with the Senators in May 1961 and reached the majors that September. He won a Gold Glove and Detroit's Tiger of the Year award in 1972, when he went 72 consecutive games without an error, and made the 1973 All-Star team. His final season, 1975, took him through St. Louis, Texas and New York. He later taught fielding in Detroit's farm system, managed Montgomery in 1977 and worked as a White Sox coach and scout from 1983 through 2000.
