1971 Topps #390 Glenn Beckert

About Glenn Beckert
Beckert collected 181 hits in 530 at-bats over 131 games in 1971 and made the All-Star team. A 7-for-9 showing in an August 8 doubleheader against the Giants put him atop the league in batting average. Later that season he ruptured a tendon in his right thumb while tumbling after a bouncing single by Ted Simmons. His #390, a third-series card, shows him with the Chicago Cubs.
Glenn Beckert became the Chicago Cubs' second baseman in 1965, stepping into the job after the sudden death of Ken Hubbs. A Pittsburgh native who played college ball at Allegheny College before the Red Sox signed him and the Cubs drafted him away, Beckert spent nine seasons at the position, playing alongside shortstop Don Kessinger and third baseman Ron Santo. He was a difficult batter to strike out, leading the National League in fewest strikeouts per at-bat five times, and in 1968 he led the league in runs scored and won a Gold Glove. Beckert made four straight All-Star teams from 1969 through 1972, and his best offensive season came in 1971, when he hit .342 to finish third in the batting race. After the 1973 season the Cubs traded him to the San Diego Padres, where he closed out his career as a utility infielder before his release in 1975. He finished with 1,473 hits and a .283 career average over 11 seasons, and he is an inductee of the Chicagoland Sports Hall of Fame.
