1971 Topps #388 Al Oliver

About Al Oliver
After the 1970 season Pittsburgh sent Al Oliver to Puerto Rican winter ball to play center field under Roberto Clemente, then traded regular center fielder Matty Alou in January 1971 to open the job. Oliver hit .282 with 14 home runs and 64 RBI in 143 games and homered off Jerry Johnson in the 9-5 NLCS clincher against San Francisco. His #388 comes from the third series.
Al Oliver was a left-handed outfielder and first baseman who spent 18 seasons in the majors, the first ten with Pittsburgh, followed by Texas, Montreal, San Francisco, Philadelphia, Los Angeles and Toronto. He batted .303 with 2,743 hits, 219 home runs and 1,326 RBI, hitting .300 or better in eleven seasons. His ability to dig low throws out of the dirt at first base earned him the nickname Scoop. Oliver made seven All-Star teams and won Silver Slugger Awards at three positions: outfield, designated hitter and first base. He played center field for Pittsburgh's 1971 World Series champions. In 1980 he drove in 117 runs for Texas, and in 1982 he won the NL batting title at .331 with Montreal and shared the RBI lead with 109. The Pirates inducted him into their Hall of Fame in 2025.
