1971 Topps #507 George Stone

About George Stone
Stone opened 1970 with his first career shutout, in Houston, and won six of his first seven decisions before the Braves slid to fifth place. He finished 11-11 with a 3.86 ERA in 207 1/3 innings, and Atlanta fielded trade offers afterward, including a Dodgers pursuit that offered Don Sutton. Card #507, a fourth-series issue, pictures him with the Braves.
George Stone was a left-handed pitcher who spent nine seasons in the majors with the Atlanta Braves and New York Mets. A Louisiana Tech product signed by the Braves in 1966, he reached Atlanta as a September call-up in 1967 and became a rookie regular in 1968, working his way into the starting rotation. In 1969 he went 13-10 with a 3.65 ERA and helped the Braves win the National League West before the club fell to the Mets in the NLCS. His success stemmed from two different change-ups and a slider taught to him by Braves general manager Paul Richards. Joining the Mets in 1973, he had his finest year, going 12-3 with a 2.80 ERA to lead the National League in winning percentage. Arm trouble limited him in 1974 and 1975, his final season. He finished with a 60-57 career record, a 3.89 ERA and 590 strikeouts.
