1971 Topps #656 Gerry Nyman

About Gerry Nyman
Jerry Nyman spent 1971 in the minors, pitching for the Lodi Padres, Evansville Triplets and Hawaii Islanders and going a combined 2-9 with a 4.59 ERA in 28 games. His 1971 Topps card, #656, from the sixth series, lists him with the Padres.
Gerald Smith Nyman, a left-handed pitcher out of Logan, Utah, signed with the Chicago White Sox as an undrafted free agent in 1965 after attending Brigham Young University. He worked his way through the White Sox chain with stops at Sarasota, the Deerfield Beach/Winter Haven, Fox Cities and Lynchburg affiliates, Evansville, and Hawaii before debuting in the majors on August 24, 1968 against the Minnesota Twins. Nyman spent parts of three seasons with Chicago and San Diego, working mostly as a starter and throwing complete-game shutouts in his first start of both 1968 and 1969. Traded to the Padres for Tommie Sisk in March 1970, he closed out his major league career that September. He pitched in the minors through 1971, then built a long second career as a coach, including stints as Tampa Bay's minor league pitching coordinator and as pitching coach for several affiliates over more than 30 years in the game.
