1971 Topps #533 Mike Ryan

About Mike Ryan
Ryan's 1970 was cut short on May 2, when he and Tim McCarver both broke their hands in a game against the Giants and the Phillies had to use Jim Hutto, an outfielder and first baseman, as a defensive substitute. He returned July 6 and went back on the disabled list August 15, finishing with 46 games, a .179 average and 2 home runs. His Phillies card is #533, from the fifth series.
Mike Ryan was a defensive-minded catcher who spent 11 seasons in the majors with the Boston Red Sox, Philadelphia Phillies and Pittsburgh Pirates from 1964 to 1974. A Haverhill, Massachusetts native and a St. James High School graduate, Ryan signed with the Red Sox as an amateur free agent in 1960 and worked through four of their minor league affiliates before being promoted from Double-A in September 1964. He was Boston's most-used catcher in 1966, hitting .214 in 116 games. The following year he caught a team-high 79 games for the pennant-winning Impossible Dream Red Sox, then appeared in Game 4 of the World Series as a late-inning replacement for Elston Howard, going hitless in two at bats against Bob Gibson. Traded to Philadelphia that offseason, he caught for the Phillies through 1973 and hit a career-high 12 home runs in 1969, then closed his playing days with the 1974 Pirates club that won the National League East. He collected 370 hits in 1,920 at bats for a .193 average. His .991 fielding percentage reflected his strength as a defensive catcher. He returned to Philadelphia as a bullpen coach for 16 seasons beginning with the 1980 world championship club, working for seven managers before retiring after 1995. He died in 2020.
