About Mike Wegener
Mike Wegener went 3-6 with a 5.26 ERA in 25 games for the 1970 Expos, 16 of them starts. On August 5 he threw a seven-hit, six-strikeout complete game to beat the Cubs 6-2. His 1971 Topps card, #608, from the fifth series, shows him with Montreal; his last game was September 26, 1970.
Mike Wegener was a right-handed pitcher who stood 6 ft 4 in. He had good stuff but was prone to wildness. Signed by the Baltimore Orioles before the 1964 season, he was taken by the Philadelphia Phillies in that year's first-year draft, then chosen by the expansion Montreal Expos in the 1968 draft. He pitched for Montreal in 1969 and 1970, making 57 appearances, 42 of them starts, and totaling 270 innings. Career highlights included a four-hit shutout of the San Francisco Giants and an 11-inning, 15-strikeout game against the New York Mets. He also walked 152 batters and threw 17 wild pitches, and he finished 8-20 with a 4.73 ERA. He fielded .984 for his career and hit .193 with nine RBI. On July 18, 1970, he gave up Willie Mays's 3,000th career hit. Wegener died in Fort Collins, Colorado, in December 2023 after a long illness.
