Paul Hawthorne Ratliff was born January 23, 1944, in San Diego, California, and played high school baseball at Pasadena High School in Pasadena, Texas. A left-handed hitting, right-throwing catcher, he signed with the Minnesota Twins as an amateur free agent in 1962 and broke into the majors the following spring at age nineteen, making the Twins' Opening Day roster. After a brief look in 1963 he spent several years in the minors before returning to Minnesota in 1970, where he split the catching job with George Mitterwald and played in the 1970 American League Championship Series against Baltimore. He was traded to the Milwaukee Brewers for Phil Roof and played there in 1971 and 1972; his last major league game came on July 23, 1972, and the Brewers traded him to the California Angels on July 28. Over parts of four seasons he hit .205 with 12 home runs and 42 RBIs in 145 games.
