1971 Topps #658 Paul Lindblad

About Paul Lindblad
Lindblad's #658 in the sixth print series of 1971 Topps lists him with the Athletics, yet 43 of his 51 games that year came for the Washington Senators. Across both clubs he went 7-4 with a 2.80 ERA and 8 saves, all in relief. With Washington alone he was 6-4 with a 2.58 ERA, and all eight of his saves came there.
Paul Lindblad was a left-handed pitcher who spent 14 major league seasons, 1965 through 1978, almost entirely as a reliever. He debuted with the Kansas City Athletics on September 15, 1965, followed the franchise to Oakland in 1968, and later pitched for the Washington Senators, Texas Rangers and New York Yankees. After beginning his career as a minor league starter, he moved into middle and long relief. He set a major league record for a pitcher by playing 385 consecutive games without an error, a streak that ran from 1966 to 1974. Lindblad won World Series titles with Oakland in 1973 and 1974 and with the Yankees in 1978. In Game 3 of the 1973 Series against the Mets, he earned the win with two shutout innings and became the last pitcher to face Willie Mays. He finished 68-63 with a 3.29 ERA and 64 saves. After retiring he worked as a minor league pitching coach and as a custom home builder. He died January 1, 2006, in Arlington, Texas.
