Byron Browne was an outfielder from St. Joseph, Missouri, signed by the Pittsburgh Pirates as an amateur free agent in September 1962 and drafted by the Chicago Cubs from the Pirates in the 1963 first-year draft. He debuted with the Cubs on September 9, 1965, facing Sandy Koufax during the future Hall of Famer's perfect game. Browne split parts of three seasons with the Cubs before being traded to the Houston Astros in May 1968 for Aaron Pointer. The Cardinals purchased him in February 1969, and that October he went to the Philadelphia Phillies with Curt Flood, Tim McCarver and Joe Hoerner in the trade that brought Dick Allen, Cookie Rojas and Jerry Johnson to St. Louis. He closed out his career with the Phillies through 1972, finishing with a .236 average and 30 home runs in 349 games. His son, Byron Browne Jr., later spent ten seasons in the Milwaukee Brewers farm system.
