About Rafael Robles

In September 1970 the Padres recalled Rafael Robles, who started 21 of their last 27 games at shortstop. He hit .213 in 23 games, and two of his hits drew notice: a seventh-inning single that broke up Gaylord Perry's perfect-game bid on September 19, and a leadoff single against Marichal a week later. His 1971 Topps card, #408, is from the fourth series and shows him with San Diego. He spent part of 1971 with the Hawaii Islanders of the Pacific Coast League.

Rafael Robles was a Dominican shortstop from San Pedro de Macoris who signed with the San Francisco Giants in 1967 and was drafted by the expansion San Diego Padres in October 1968. He played winter ball for Escogido and was named the Dominican League's Rookie of the Year. He broke camp with San Diego in 1969 and became the first player to bat in Padres history, reaching base on an error by Joe Morgan and stealing second in the opener. Robles spent parts of three seasons with the Padres, 1969, 1970 and 1972, shuttling between San Diego and the high minors at Elmira, Salt Lake City and Hawaii in between. With fellow Dominican Roberto Pena he formed the majors' first all-Dominican double-play combination, and he hit .188 in 47 big-league games. Robles also helped the Dominican Republic win its first Caribbean Series title in 1971 while playing for Licey. His major league career ended in 1972, and he died in New York in 1998 at age 50. His son Orlando is a Latin urban artist.
