1971 Topps #383 Rod Gaspar

About Rod Gaspar
The Mets still owed San Diego a player to complete the Ron Herbel deal, and Gaspar went west on December 20, 1970, which is why #383 in the 1971 Topps set shows him with the Padres. He was one of eight outfield candidates in Yuma camp, but Preston Gomez optioned him to the Hawaii Islanders, where he batted .274 with 26 steals and an Islanders-record 107 walks. In September he went 2-for-17 for San Diego.
Rod Gaspar was a switch-hitting outfielder on the 1969 World Series champion New York Mets who also played for the San Diego Padres, 178 major-league games in all across 1969, 1970, 1971 and 1974. A Long Beach native who played at Long Beach City College and Long Beach State, he made the Mets out of 1969 spring training after a hitting streak he recalled as thirteen games, and started in right field on Opening Day. He hit .228 that rookie year, with his only major-league home run coming off Mike McCormick on May 30, and led National League outfielders with six double plays. In Game Four of the World Series he pinch-ran for Jerry Grote and scored the winning run in the 10th inning when Pete Richert's throw hit J. C. Martin on the wrist as Martin ran out his bunt. Before the Series Frank Robinson, confusing his name, had said "Bring on Rod Stupid." Gaspar retired at 30 and moved into financial services.
