About Ron Bryant

Bryant moved into the rotation in 1971, starting 22 of his 27 games and going 7-10 with a 3.79 ERA. Three of those starts were complete games, two of them shutouts. San Francisco reached the NLCS against Pittsburgh, and he pitched 2 innings with two strikeouts as the Pirates won the series 3-1. His card is #621, from the fifth series.

Ron Bryant was a left-handed pitcher from Redlands, California, who spent nearly his whole career with the San Francisco Giants, 1967 to 1975, and finished 57-56 with a 4.02 ERA over 917 innings. His peak was 1973, when he won 24 games, led the National League and was named The Sporting News Pitcher of the Year and its All-Star left-hander. Giants equipment manager Mike Murphy gave him the nickname Bear, saying Bryant looked like one with his chunky build, his walk and his curly hair. His request to be placed on the voluntary retired list was granted on April 4, 1975, and he cited a wish to spend more time with his wife and two children. The Giants traded his contract to the St. Louis Cardinals on May 9 for Larry Herndon and minor leaguer Tony Gonzales, and the Cardinals released him on July 30 after he rejected a demotion to Tulsa. The Dodgers cut him in spring training 1976, and he stayed in the organization at Albuquerque until his release on July 13. Bryant died in Boise, Idaho, in 2023.
