1971 Topps #738 Russ Gibson

About Russ Gibson
Gibson spent all of 1970 with San Francisco in a backup role, hitting .232 with six RBI in 24 games. He caught 23 of those games and went homerless in 69 at-bats. Card #738 comes from the sixth print series and lists him with the Giants.
Russ Gibson was a catcher from Fall River, Massachusetts, who spent ten seasons in the minor leagues before finally reaching the majors with his hometown Boston Red Sox in 1967 at age 27. He caught Billy Rohr's near no-hitter in his big league debut and helped Boston to the pennant that year, appearing in the World Series against St. Louis. Gibson shared catching duties in Boston through 1969, his best season, batting .251 with career highs in games, hits and runs. His contract was sold to the San Francisco Giants before the 1970 season, and he served as a backup catcher there through 1972. Over a six-year career he batted .228 with eight home runs and 78 RBI. He retired after the 1972 season and later lived in Swansea, Massachusetts, until his death in 2008.
