1971 Topps #555 Walt Williams

About Walt Williams
Walt Williams' #555 is a fifth-series card printed with the White Sox. It follows a 1970 in which he fell to .251 in 110 games after a contract dispute with general manager Ed Short, who told him that refusing the salary offer would cost him regular playing time. The 5 ft 6 in outfielder finished with 3 home runs and 15 RBI, down from 32 RBI in 1969.
Walter Allen Williams was an outfielder who broke in with the Houston Colt .45's in 1964 and played parts of six seasons with the Chicago White Sox, where his hustling style included a June 1967 dive for a ball rolling toward the Red Sox dugout. Signed out of San Francisco's Galileo High School, he won the Texas League batting title with Tulsa in 1965 and returned to the majors in 1967 after a trade from St. Louis. His best season came in 1969, when he hit .304 and finished sixth in the American League batting race while striking out only 33 times. Traded to Cleveland in 1972 and to the Yankees in 1974, he closed his major league career in 1975 with a .270 average over 842 games. He later played in Japan and Mexico and managed in the minor leagues in the 1990s.
