The story on this card
Anderson opened 1972 at Triple-A Iowa and joined Oakland in early May when second baseman Dick Green was injured. He went hitless in seven at-bats over three games, and on May 15 the Athletics traded him to St. Louis for reliever Don Shaw. He hit .267 in 57 games for the Cardinals until a pitch in batting practice at Montreal on September 13 fractured his left arm. His rookie card, #268 from the third series, is a Rookie Stars issue shared with Chris Floethe, both men printed with Oakland. Dwain Anderson, an El Cerrito, California shortstop, played 149 major-league games from 1971 to 1974 for the Athletics, Cardinals, Padres and Indians, and his 1972 season with St. Louis earned him a place on the Topps All-Rookie Team.
Floethe went 7-12 with a 3.52 ERA in 27 games for Double-A Birmingham in 1971. He struck out 225 batters in 174 innings. His 1972 Topps rookie card, third-series #268, paired him with Dwain Anderson on an Oakland Rookie Stars panel. Oakland minor league pitcher Chris Floethe was the father of Fresno State pitcher Jake Floethe. Jake appeared in the opening game of the 2008 College World Series championship series against Georgia.
