1972 Topps #411 Bob Montgomery

About Bob Montgomery
Carlton Fisk was called up in September 1971 and took over the job in 1972, leaving Montgomery 24 games. He raised his average to .286 with two home runs and seven RBI. The Red Sox missed the pennant by half a game in a year opened late by a player strike. Card #411 is a fourth-series Boston issue.
Bob Montgomery was a Nashville-born catcher who spent all 10 of his major-league seasons, 1970 through 1979, with the Boston Red Sox, nearly all as the backup behind Carlton Fisk. He signed in 1962 and played outfield and third base at Olean, and Waterloo manager Len Okrie steered him to catcher in 1963 because he lacked the power for a corner spot. He stepped in as the main catcher in 1974 after Fisk's season-ending injury on June 28 and again in 1975 after Fisk broke an arm. He pinch-hit in Game Seven of the 1975 World Series, grounding out to shortstop against Will McEnaney. He finished with a .258 average, 23 home runs and 156 RBI in 387 games. As a result of a grandfather clause, he was the last major leaguer to bat without a helmet. From 1982 to 1995 he was the color commentator on Red Sox television, and he is credited with 11 Emmy Awards.
