About Curt Blefary In Action
Oakland used Blefary in 1971 as a pinch-hitter and utilityman, including 14 games at catcher, and he went 0 for 1 in the Athletics' three-game ALCS loss to Baltimore. Topps pictured him with Oakland twice in the sixth series of 1972, on #691 and on the In Action card #692. On May 17, 1972, the A's honored his request for a trade and sent him to San Diego, along with Mike Kilkenny and a player to be named later, for Ollie Brown. He hit .196 in 102 at-bats for the Padres, who released him in December.
Curtis Leroy Blefary was born July 5, 1943 in Brooklyn, New York, and raised in Mahwah, New Jersey. A left-handed-hitting outfielder, first baseman, and catcher, he played eight major league seasons for the Baltimore Orioles, Houston Astros, New York Yankees, Oakland Athletics, and San Diego Padres. Signed by the Yankees in 1962, he was claimed by Baltimore on waivers in 1963 and broke into the majors in 1965, batting .260 with 22 home runs to win the American League Rookie of the Year award. He played in the Orioles' 1966 World Series sweep of the Dodgers, going 1 for 13. Traded to Houston in December 1968, he later played for the Yankees, Athletics, and Padres before retiring in 1972 with a .237 career batting average, 112 home runs, and 382 RBIs in 974 games. He faced alcoholism and ill health in his later years and died in 2001; at his request, his ashes were scattered at Baltimore's Memorial Stadium.
