About Doug Griffin In Action

Two Griffin cards sit in the sixth series. The base card, #703, carries the All-Star Rookie trophy for his 1971 season, and #704 is an In Action card. His 1972 season brought a .260 average, 122 hits, 15 sacrifice hits and the Gold Glove, even though a Gaylord Perry pitch broke his hand and kept him on the disabled list from August 9 to September 1.

Doug Griffin was a slick-fielding second baseman who played eight seasons in the majors, one with the California Angels and seven with the Boston Red Sox. The Angels drafted him in the 21st round in 1965, and after two years in the Navy at Pearl Harbor he hit .326 for Hawaii in 1970 and was named the Pacific Coast League's Rookie of the Year. He debuted with the Angels on September 11, 1970, and a month later was traded to Boston in the deal that sent Tony Conigliaro to California. He was the Red Sox regular at second base from 1971 until mid-1975 and won the 1972 Gold Glove. Injuries repeatedly interrupted his seasons: a broken hand in 1972, another fracture in 1973, and beanings from Nolan Ryan in 1974 and Dick Bosman in 1975. Denny Doyle took most of the second-base work in 1975, and Griffin made one brief appearance in that year's World Series. His playing career ended in 1977, and he later worked in construction. He finished with a .245 average and 7 home runs in 632 games.
