About Hal Breeden

The Cubs sent Breeden and Hector Torres to Montreal for Dan McGinn on April 7, 1972. He appeared in 42 games for the Expos that year, hitting .230 with three home runs. His #684 is a rookie card from the sixth series, and it shows him with the Cubs, for whom he had hit .139 in 23 games in 1971.

Hal Breeden was a first baseman who hit right-handed and threw left-handed, a combination that made him a rarity. Signed by the Milwaukee Braves as a free agent in 1963, he hit .406 in 75 games for Yakima in 1964. In 1970 he hit 37 home runs in 136 games for Richmond, and on November 30 the Cubs gave up Hoyt Wilhelm to get him, a straight-up deal with Atlanta. He debuted on April 7, 1971, against Steve Carlton and the Cardinals, pinch hitting for Earl Stephenson and grounding out, and spent part of that season as a teammate of his brother, catcher Danny Breeden. He played for Montreal from 1972 to 1975, and on July 13, 1973, he hit two pinch-hit home runs in one doubleheader, tying the record Joe Cronin set for the 1943 Red Sox. Tommy John called him a good pull hitter. His last big-league game came on September 11, 1975, and he finished with 21 home runs in 273 games. He then played three seasons in Japan for the Hanshin Tigers and later served as sheriff of Lee County, Georgia, for twenty years, until 2008.
