About Jim McAndrew

McAndrew's 1971 took a bad turn in early May, when a pregame collision with Gary Gentry in the Mets outfield put him in the hospital with 38 stitches. He finished 2-5 with a 4.38 ERA in 90 1/3 innings. Card #781, from the sixth series of 1972 Topps, lists him with the Mets. In 1972 he rebounded to 11-8 with a 2.80 ERA over 160 2/3 innings, making 23 starts in 28 games.

Jim McAndrew was a right-handed pitcher born January 11, 1944, in Lost Nation, Iowa, the oldest of four children on a farm where his father raised chickens and grew corn. He played baseball and basketball at the University of Iowa and earned a psychology degree. The Mets drafted him in the 11th round of the 1965 draft. McAndrew debuted on July 21, 1968, filling in for Nolan Ryan against Bob Gibson and the Cardinals. Despite a hard-luck start in which the Mets were shut out in his first four appearances, he finished 4-7 with a 2.28 ERA as a rookie. He pitched for the Mets from 1968 through 1973, in a rotation that included Tom Seaver and Jerry Koosman. He was a member of the 1969 World Series champions and the 1973 National League pennant winners, though he did not pitch in either Series. After the 1973 season the Mets traded him to the San Diego Padres, and he closed out his career there in 1974. He finished with a 37-53 record and a 3.65 ERA over 161 games.
