1972 Topps #780 Dick Green

About Dick Green
"I'm lucky, the caliber ballplayer I am, to get my eight or nine years in," Dick Green said ahead of the 1972 season. He had 12 hits in 42 at-bats that summer. He went 1 for 8 as Oakland beat Detroit 3-2 in the ALCS. In the World Series he went 6 for 18 as the Athletics beat Cincinnati. His #780, from the sixth series, lists him with the Athletics.
Richard Larry Green was born April 21, 1941, in Sioux City, Iowa, and grew up in Yankton and Mitchell, South Dakota, where he was an all-state football quarterback before signing with the Kansas City Athletics as an amateur free agent ahead of the 1960 season. He reached the majors on September 9, 1963, and won the starting second base job in 1964; aside from a slump-driven stretch at third base in 1967, he was the primary second baseman for Kansas City and Oakland through most of his twelve seasons. A slick-fielding infielder with quick hands and strong range, Green reached a career high of 15 home runs in 1965. He missed most of 1972 after back surgery but recovered in time for the postseason, and he played on Oakland's three consecutive World Series championship teams from 1972 through 1974. In the 1974 World Series he went hitless in thirteen at-bats yet won the Babe Ruth Award for his fielding, taking part in six double plays over the five games. He retired after the 1974 season to run his family's moving business, finishing with a .240 career batting average, 960 hits, 80 home runs and 422 RBIs over 1,288 games.
