1972 Topps #505 Mike Marshall

About Mike Marshall
Marshall's 1972 with Montreal produced a 14-8 record, a 1.78 ERA and 18 saves. He pitched 116 innings in 65 games, all in relief, and struck out 95. He was voted the Expos' Player of the Year. His #505 is a fourth-series card that lists him with Montreal.
Michael Grant Marshall was a right-handed pitcher from Adrian, Michigan, who spent 14 major league seasons with nine clubs between 1967 and 1981. Signed by the Philadelphia Phillies as an amateur free agent, he made his major league debut with the Detroit Tigers in 1967. Seattle took him in the 1968 expansion draft, and after a stop in Houston he reached the Montreal Expos, where he led the National League in games pitched and saves in 1973. Traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers for Willie Davis after the 1973 season, Marshall set a major league record with 106 relief appearances in 1974 and won the National League Cy Young Award, the first reliever to do so. He earned two All-Star selections and closed out his career with the Minnesota Twins and New York Mets. Off the field he earned a doctorate in exercise physiology from Michigan State University and later taught his own pitching mechanics.
