1972 Topps #504 Ed Spiezio

About Ed Spiezio
A holdout preceded Spiezio's 1971 season, ending when he reportedly agreed to a $25,000 contract with San Diego. A pulled side muscle, a hand injury, strained knee ligaments and a bouncing ball to the face limited him to 97 games, mostly at third base. He hit .231 with seven home runs and 36 RBI. His #504 card, in the fourth series, shows him with the Padres. In 1972 he refused a 20 percent pay cut and was assigned to Hawaii.
Ed Spiezio broke in with the St. Louis Cardinals as a pinch-hitter in July 1964 and spent five seasons there, mostly as a reserve, with three pennant winners and two World Series champions. A Joliet, Illinois native who set hitting records at Lewis College before signing with St. Louis, he finally became an everyday player after the Cardinals sent him to the expansion San Diego Padres, where he delivered the new franchise's first hit, home run and run in its 1969 opener. Spiezio played third base for the Padres into the early 1970s before finishing his nine-year career with the Chicago White Sox in 1972. Over 554 games he hit .238 with 39 home runs. An accomplished accordion player who often played for his teammates, he is the father of major leaguer Scott Spiezio.
