About Reggie Smith In Action

Reggie Smith made the All-Star team in 1972, with 21 home runs and 74 RBI in 131 games. He also set a new seasonal high for walks while cutting his strikeouts by 23 percent. His three Topps cards that year are #88, the American League RBI leaders card in the first series, shared with Harmon Killebrew and Frank Robinson, and his own #565 and In Action #566 in the fifth series. He is listed with the Red Sox on all three.

Carl Reginald Smith, born April 2, 1945 in Shreveport, Louisiana and raised in Los Angeles, was a switch-hitting outfielder who spent 17 major league seasons with the Boston Red Sox, St. Louis Cardinals, Los Angeles Dodgers and San Francisco Giants from 1966 to 1982. He hit .287 with 2,020 hits, 314 home runs and 1,092 RBI, drew seven All-Star selections, and won a Gold Glove in the outfield. A five-tool talent with one of the strongest throwing arms of his era, Smith reached the World Series four times, hitting three home runs in the 1977 Fall Classic for the Dodgers. He broke into the majors in 1966 after leading the International League in batting for the Toronto Maple Leafs, then endured a difficult racial climate in Boston before finding a more comfortable fit in St. Louis alongside Bob Gibson and Lou Brock. After his playing days he coached for the Dodgers and USA Baseball, including Olympic teams.
