1972 Topps #630 Rich Hebner

About Rich Hebner
Hebner hit .300 with 19 home runs and 72 RBI in 1972 as Pittsburgh outpaced the second-place Cubs by 11 games in the NL East. On April 25 he hit the first of his six career walk-off home runs, a two-run shot in the 13th inning. He committed nine errors at third base, a .969 fielding percentage that remains a Pirate record for a third baseman. His 1972 Topps card, with the Pirates, is #630 from the fifth print series.
Richie Hebner spent 18 seasons in the majors, most of them at third base for the Pittsburgh Pirates teams that won five NL East titles in six years and beat Baltimore in the 1971 World Series. Born in Brighton, Massachusetts, he was a star hockey player at Norwood High School before the Pirates made him their first pick, 15th overall, in the 1966 draft. The left-handed hitter got a September look in 1968, took over third base in 1969 and hit .301, and reached a career-high 25 home runs in 1973. In the 1971 postseason he homered off future Hall of Famers Juan Marichal and Gaylord Perry in the NLCS, then off Jim Palmer in the World Series. In the offseason he dug graves at the cemeteries his father supervised, which earned him the nickname "Digger." He signed with the Phillies as a free agent and moved to first base, then played for the Mets, the Tigers, the Pirates again and the Cubs, finishing in 1985 as a pinch hitter. He later spent years as a hitting coach and minor league manager.
