About Steve Hamilton

Hamilton's NBA-sized wingspan let him throw sidearm, an angle that was especially hard on left-handed batters. Sixth-series #766 has him with the Chicago Cubs, where he closed out his playing career in 1972. He went 1-0 with a 4.76 ERA in 22 games for Chicago. He struck out 13 in 17 innings, and his last major league game was on August 16.

Steve Hamilton was born November 30, 1934, in Columbia, Kentucky, and died in Morehead, Kentucky, on December 2, 1997. A 1957 basketball All-American at Morehead State, he went to the Minneapolis Lakers eighth overall, in the second round of the 1958 NBA draft. He played two NBA seasons and lost the 1959 Finals to Boston. He pitched twelve major league seasons, 1961-1972, for Cleveland, Washington, the Yankees, the White Sox, San Francisco and the Cubs, chiefly as a left-handed Yankee reliever from 1963 through 1970. He finished 40-31 with a 3.05 ERA and 42 saves and worked the 1963 and 1964 World Series. Late in his career he threw the 'Folly Floater,' a high, slow lob in the tradition of Rip Sewell's eephus. He is one of only two men to play in both a World Series and an NBA Finals; Gene Conley is the other. He coached for the Detroit Tigers in 1975, then became Morehead State's baseball coach and served as the school's athletic director until his death. Morehead State's athletics hall of fame took him in 1985, and he is a Kentucky Athletic Hall of Fame member as well.
