About this card

Cards #601-616 are the sixteen three-player 1973 Rookies cards, each titled by position. A Rookies card is a rookie card for the players on it who had no earlier Topps flagship card, and the rookie-card answer on each card names the players it counts for.

The story on this card

Busby went 16-15 with a 4.23 ERA in 37 starts in 1973, including an April 27 no-hitter against the Tigers, a 3-0 win. He was named The Sporting News American League rookie pitcher of the year. His Topps card is #608, a high number from the fifth series, shared with Dick Colpaert of the Indians and George Medich of the Yankees; all three are on rookie cards, and Busby is printed with the Royals. Steve Busby pitched for Kansas City from 1972 to 1980, throwing no-hitters in 1973 and 1974 and winning 22 games in 1974. A torn rotator cuff ended his run at 70-54 with a 3.72 ERA.

Colpaert made 61 relief appearances for Pittsburgh's Triple-A Charleston club in 1972. He went 14-7 with a 2.31 ERA and 21 saves. His rookie card, #608 in the fifth series of 1973 Topps, was a high number in the Rookies subset. It printed Colpaert with Cleveland, alongside Kansas City's Steve Busby and the Yankees' George Medich. Dick Colpaert pitched 8 games in relief for Pittsburgh in 1970 during a 13-season minor-league career. He retired his first 9 major-league batters and earned his only victory against Atlanta.

Card #608 is a three-pitcher Rookies card, Medich with the Yankees beside Steve Busby of the Royals and Dick Colpaert of the Indians, and it is the rookie card for all three men. He made the 1973 Yankees after a one-start September 1972 debut, went 14-9 with a 2.95 ERA in 235 innings, and tied Busby for third in American League Rookie of the Year voting. Doc Medich was a 6-foot-5 right-hander who won 124 games from 1972 to 1982 while earning a medical degree at Pittsburgh. He pitched for seven clubs, including the Yankees and Rangers, and twice gave CPR to fans stricken in the stands.
