About this card
Cards #601-616 are the sixteen three-player 1973 Rookies cards, each titled by position. A Rookies card is a rookie card for the players on it who had no earlier Topps flagship card, and the rookie-card answer on each card names the players it counts for.
The story on this card
Frias made the 1973 Expos' early-season roster and debuted April 6, playing 100 games, his most in a Montreal season, with 46 at shortstop and 44 at second base. He batted .231 with 52 hits. Rookies card #607 pairs him with Ray Busse of the Cardinals and Mario Guerrero of the Red Sox; the card comes from the fifth series, a high number, and it is his first Topps card. Pepe Frias was a Dominican infielder who played 1973 to 1981 with the Expos, Braves, Rangers and Dodgers. A backup in Montreal, he played 137 games at shortstop for Atlanta in 1979 and hit his only home run that year.
Houston sent Busse and Bobby Fenwick to St. Louis in November 1972, and the Cardinals opened 1973 with him and Ken Reitz on an all-rookie left side of the infield. Busse made two errors in the April 6 opener at Pittsburgh and was hitting .143 with 11 errors when fans booed him on May 14. On June 8 the Cardinals traded him back to Houston for Stan Papi. The Rookie Shortstops card, #607, is a fifth-series high number. Busse is printed with St. Louis, Pepe Frias with the Expos and Mario Guerrero with the Red Sox. Ray Busse was a 6-foot-4 shortstop from Daytona Beach, Florida, who played 68 games for the Houston Astros and St. Louis Cardinals between 1971 and 1974 and was once rated the best shortstop in the minor leagues.
Guerrero shares card #607 with Pepe Frias of the Expos and Ray Busse of the Cardinals, and it is a rookie card for Guerrero and Frias. Guerrero is listed with the Red Sox; he hit .301 for Louisville in 1972 and was named the International League's All-Star shortstop. Mario Guerrero was a Dominican shortstop who played 697 games from 1973 to 1980 for Boston, St. Louis, California and Oakland. He hit .257 for his career and played 143 games for the 1978 Athletics.
