About Angels Field Leaders (Bobby Winkles / Tom Morgan / Salty Parker / Jimmie Reese / John Roseboro)
Winkles won his first game as a major-league manager 2-1 over Kansas City. Frank Robinson homered on the first pitch he saw as an Angel while President Richard Nixon watched. California finished fourth in the AL West at 79-83. Fourth-series Topps #421 grouped Winkles with Tom Morgan, Salty Parker, Jimmie Reese and John Roseboro. Bobby Winkles led Arizona State to three national titles, then jumped from campus to the majors in 1972 as an Angels coach and managed California and Oakland to a 170-213 record. He is in the College Baseball Hall of Fame.
Morgan was the California Angels' pitching coach from 1972 through 1974, and he held the job again from 1981 through 1983. Card #421, a fourth-series issue, puts him with manager Bobby Winkles, Salty Parker, Jimmie Reese and John Roseboro on the Angels' managers-and-coaches card. Former Yankees pitcher Tom Morgan advised Tommy John on his throwing motion in 1980 after watching him on television. John credited the adjustment with helping him out of a slump.
Parker, Houston's third-base coach in 1972, managed the Astros to a 6-5 win over Montreal on August 26 between the tenures of Harry Walker and Leo Durocher. Durocher fired him in early October, and the Angels hired him in November. The Angels' fourth-series 1973 Topps #421 listed Parker with Bobby Winkles, Tom Morgan, Jimmie Reese and John Roseboro. Salty Parker's nickname came from his boyhood job in an East St. Louis store. The owner named the future baseball coach for his habit of eating the shop's salted peanuts.
Reese joined the California Angels' coaching staff on March 30, 1972, after scouting for Montreal, and was hired as a conditioning coach to get the players into shape. Fourth-series Topps #421 listed him with Bobby Winkles, Tom Morgan, Salty Parker and John Roseboro. Jimmie Reese, the former Yankees infielder and longtime coach, managed the Pacific Coast League's San Diego Padres from 1960 until he resigned partway through 1961, saying he preferred coaching.
Roseboro joined the California Angels coaching staff in 1972 after coaching the Washington Senators under Ted Williams in 1971. His fourth-series 1973 Topps manager-and-coaches card, #421, paired him with manager Bobby Winkles and coaches Tom Morgan, Salty Parker and Jimmie Reese. Future Dodgers catcher John Roseboro began his professional career at Sheboygan in 1952, hitting .365 to finish second in the Wisconsin State League batting race. Army service interrupted his minor league career in 1953 and 1954.
