1973 Topps #420 Tommie Agee

About Tommie Agee
Agee was batting .281 on the day Willie Mays took his first at-bat as a Met in 1972. Gil Hodges had died before the season, and under manager Yogi Berra Agee still got most of the center field starts over Mays but no longer played every day. As an Astro he went two for three in his first game against the Mets, a 4-2 Houston win on April 24, 1973. His 1973 card, #420 from the fourth series, lists him with Houston.
Tommie Agee was a center fielder who broke in with Cleveland in 1962, moved to the Chicago White Sox in a three-team trade after the 1964 season, and was a key part of the 1969 Miracle Mets. He grew up in Mobile, Alabama with future Mets teammate Cleon Jones, then signed with Cleveland after one season at Grambling State. In Chicago he won the 1966 AL Rookie of the Year award and a Gold Glove after homering more than 20 times and stealing more than 40 bases as a rookie, then made a second All-Star team in 1967. Traded to New York after the 1967 season, he led the 1969 Mets in homers and RBIs, and homered twice in the NLCS sweep of Atlanta. In Game 3 of the World Series he hit a leadoff home run and made two catches that potentially saved five runs in a 5-0 Mets win over Baltimore. He closed his career with Houston and St. Louis and died in 2001.
