1973 Topps #185 Jim Wynn

About Jim Wynn
Cesar Cedeno's emergence moved Wynn to right field in 1972, when Houston went 84-69 and Wynn drew 103 walks. "I have never been this happy," he said that summer. Manager Harry Walker was fired in late August, and successor Leo Durocher moved Wynn to leadoff to use his on-base skills, though Wynn, who saw himself as an RBI man, bristled at the move. His 1973 Topps card, #185, is a second-series issue with the Astros.
James Sherman "Jim" Wynn was nicknamed "Toy Cannon" for generating outsized power from a compact frame. He spent eleven of his fifteen major league seasons (1963-1977) with the Houston Colt .45's/Astros before two seasons with the Los Angeles Dodgers and a final stretch split among the Atlanta Braves, New York Yankees and Milwaukee Brewers. Converted from shortstop to center field early in his career, he paired power with patience at the plate, leading the majors in walks in 1969. His signature power season came in 1967, when he hit a career-high 37 home runs and drove in 107, earning his first All-Star selection and an 11th-place MVP finish. A three-time All-Star (1967, 1974, 1975), he set a career high with 108 RBIs in 1974 with the Dodgers, helped Los Angeles to the National League pennant, and was named The Sporting News Comeback Player of the Year. The Astros retired his number 24 on June 25, 2005. Career totals: 291 home runs, 964 RBI, 1,105 runs and 225 stolen bases over 1,920 games.
