About Jesus Alou

Jesus Alou played 28 games for Houston in 1973 and hit .236 with eight RBIs; Topps printed him with the Astros on #93, a first-series card. With Oakland he hit .306 in 108 at-bats. Center fielder Bill North's sprained ankle that September opened a postseason role for him. He went 2-for-6 in the ALCS against Baltimore, then 3-for-6 with two RBIs in a Game 2 World Series loss to the Mets.

Jesus Alou was a Dominican outfielder who played 15 major league seasons, the youngest of three baseball-playing brothers alongside Felipe and Matty Alou. Signed by the San Francisco Giants as a teenager out of Bajos de Haina, he worked his way up through the minors with strong batting averages and reached the majors in September 1963, joining a Giants outfield that briefly included all three brothers at once. He was a free swinger who struck out only 267 times in 4,345 career at-bats, a knack he credited to a childhood backyard game with his brothers in which a batter kept hitting as long as he did not strike out. After six years in San Francisco he moved on to the Houston Astros, then the Oakland Athletics, where he was a bench player on two World Series champions, before finishing his career with the New York Mets and a return to Houston. He survived a frightening on-field collision in 1969 that left him briefly unconscious. After retiring he spent decades working in scouting and player development for the Expos, Marlins and Red Sox.
