1973 Topps #290 Cesar Cedeno

About Cesar Cedeno
Cedeno finished 1972 hitting .320 with 22 home runs, 55 stolen bases and 39 doubles, which tied for the league lead. He made his first All-Star team, won his first Gold Glove and placed sixth in the MVP vote. This is #290, from the third series, a Houston Astros card.
Cesar Cedeno was a center fielder who played 17 major league seasons, 1970 to 1986, most of them with the Houston Astros, then the Reds, Cardinals and Dodgers. Signed out of Santo Domingo at 16 by scouts Pat Gillick and Tony Pacheco, he joined the Astros at 19 and combined power, speed and defense. He hit 20 home runs and stole 50 bases in three straight seasons, 1972 through 1974, which no other player has done. He won Gold Gloves from 1972 to 1976, made four All-Star teams and finished with 2,087 hits, 199 home runs and 550 stolen bases; his 487 steals with Houston are still the Astros career record. Houston manager Leo Durocher once said that at 22 Cedeno was as good as or better than Willie Mays had been at that age. He was traded to Cincinnati for Ray Knight after the 1981 season and reached the 1985 World Series with St. Louis. Houston inducted him into the Astros Hall of Fame in 2020.
