About Doug Rader

Rader hit .254 with 21 home runs and 89 RBI for the 1973 Astros. He appeared in 154 games, played third base in 152 and scored 79 runs. The Gold Glove at third base was his fourth in a row. His #76, a first-series card, carries Houston.

Doug Rader was a third baseman who built his reputation on defense. Signed by the Houston Astros as an undrafted free agent out of Bloomington, Illinois, he reached the majors in 1967 and became Houston's everyday third baseman the following year. Over an eleven-year career split between the Astros, San Diego Padres, and Toronto Blue Jays, he hit 155 home runs and drove in 722 runs. He won five consecutive Gold Glove Awards at third base from 1970 through 1974. Nicknamed "the Red Rooster" for the thick red hair under his cap, he later moved into coaching and managing, leading the Texas Rangers, Chicago White Sox, and California Angels between 1983 and 1991 after retiring as a player in 1978.
