1973 Topps #395 Roger Metzger

About Roger Metzger
Metzger played 154 games in 1973, 149 of them at shortstop. He hit .250 with 145 hits and 35 RBI. He stole 10 bases, and his 14 triples led the National League. His #395 sits in the third series of the set and pictures him as a Houston Astro.
Roger Metzger was a switch-hitting shortstop who held down the position for the Houston Astros through most of the 1970s, known for his strong defense and good running speed. The Chicago Cubs took him 16th overall in the 1969 draft out of St. Edward's University, and he debuted with them in 1970. Houston had him from 1971 into 1978, when he moved to the San Francisco Giants. He won the 1973 Gold Glove at shortstop, the first by an Astro at the position, and no Astros shortstop won another for 48 years. In 11 seasons he played 1,219 games and hit .231. He had five home runs and 83 stolen bases. On November 29, 1979, a table saw took the tips of four fingers on his right hand. He tried a comeback with the Giants, hit .074 in 28 games, and was released on August 10, 1980, then re-signed as a coach for the rest of that season.
