About Jack Heidemann

Heidemann's 1973 turned on March 24, when Cleveland sent him and catcher Ray Fosse to Oakland for Dave Duncan and George Hendrick. He had out-hit Frank Duffy .318 to .150 in spring training, but manager Ken Aspromonte stayed with Duffy. Oakland assigned him to Triple-A Tucson, where he hit .283 in 109 games; he never played for the A's, who won that year's World Series. Card #644, a fifth-series high number, still carries the Indians.

Jack Heidemann was a shortstop for the Cleveland Indians, St. Louis Cardinals, New York Mets and Milwaukee Brewers between 1969 and 1977. Cleveland took him 11th overall in the 1967 draft out of Brenham High School in Texas, and after a .305 season at Reno in 1968 the club protected him from the expansion draft as a 19-year-old Class A player. He debuted on May 2, 1969, as a ninth-inning defensive replacement in Washington, then left for six months of active duty with his Texas National Guard unit. In 1970 he played 132 games at shortstop and hit .211 with six home runs. Injuries cost him the job, and he spent all of 1973 in the minors. He returned to Cleveland in 1974, finished the year with St. Louis, and then played in New York and Milwaukee, retiring from the majors after the 1977 season. He finished with a .211 average, nine home runs and 75 RBI, and later worked in real estate.
