1973 Topps #514 Jerry Kenney

About Jerry Kenney
Kenney hit .210 in 50 games for the 1972 Yankees. He took the field in their final game that season, the last before George Steinbrenner bought the team in early 1973. The Indians offered him no raise, though traded players customarily received one, so he refused to sign; he planned to play the 1973 season without a contract and then sue for free agency. Card #514, a fourth-series issue, shows him with Cleveland.
Gerald Tennyson Kenney, born June 30, 1945 in St. Louis and raised in Beloit, Wisconsin, was an infielder and outfielder who spent most of his career with the New York Yankees. Signed by Yankees scout Lou Maguolo as an amateur free agent, he reached the majors in September 1967 with an inside-the-park home run among his early hits. Military service kept him off the field in 1968, and he returned in 1969 to open the season as the Yankees' starting center fielder, a role the New York press linked to the retiring Mickey Mantle. On May 13 manager Ralph Houk moved him to third base, where he played most of his games through 1971 before shifting back to shortstop for most of his final Yankees season. On November 27, 1972, the Yankees traded him to the Cleveland Indians in the deal that brought Graig Nettles to New York. He appeared in five games for Cleveland in 1973 before his release ended his major league career.
