1973 Topps #358 Jim Nettles

About Jim Nettles
The 1973 Topps card #358 still pictures Nettles with the Twins, from the third series. He played 1973 for the Tacoma Twins of the Pacific Coast League, then settled there and made it his home. He opened 1974 with Detroit's Evansville club and reached the majors in July, when Willie Horton was injured.
Jim Nettles was a left-handed-hitting outfielder from San Diego who played parts of six major league seasons between 1970 and 1981 for the Minnesota Twins, Detroit Tigers, Kansas City Royals and Oakland Athletics. He hit .220 with 16 home runs in 240 games. The younger brother of Graig Nettles, he played at San Diego State and was a fourth-round pick of the Twins in 1968. Minnesota used him as a reserve outfielder and pinch hitter, and the Twins traded him to Detroit for Paul Jata after 1973. He played for the Nankai Hawks in Japan in 1975, then spent 1977 to 1980 in the Pirates, Royals and Yankees systems. After his playing days he managed in the minors from 1983 to 1996, including the Madison Muskies from 1985 to 1989, and later coached Spokane. He is the father-in-law of Mike Sweeney.
