1973 Topps #622 Larry Hisle

About Larry Hisle
On March 6, 1973 Hisle became the first designated hitter in major league history, in a Minnesota Twins spring training game. He hit two home runs, one a grand slam, and drove in seven. Ron Blomberg of the Yankees became the first regular-season DH a month later. Hisle hit .272 with 15 home runs that year, the first of five seasons with the Twins. His 1973 Topps card, #622, is a fifth-series high number with Minnesota.
Larry Hisle was an outfielder who broke in with the Philadelphia Phillies, later played for the Minnesota Twins and Milwaukee Brewers, and made two All-Star teams over a 14-season career. Signed by the Phillies out of Portsmouth, Ohio in 1965, he reached the majors in 1968 and turned in a strong rookie season the following year before a two-year slump led to a trade away from Philadelphia. After a big year at Triple-A Albuquerque, Hisle landed with Minnesota in 1973 and led the American League in RBI in 1977. He signed with Milwaukee as a free agent in 1978 and had another big year before a torn rotator cuff limited his final seasons. After retiring in 1982, Hisle was hitting coach for the Toronto Blue Jays from 1992 through 1995, helping them to World Series titles in 1992 and 1993.
