1973 Topps #551 Mike Kilkenny

About Mike Kilkenny
In 1972 Kilkenny threw one inning for Detroit on April 30, then went to Oakland in a May 9 trade for Reggie Sanders. San Diego and Cleveland followed. He went 4-1 with a 3.78 ERA in 29 games. Card #551 in 1973 Topps is a high number from the fifth series and shows the Ontario-born left-hander with the Indians.
Mike Kilkenny was a left-handed pitcher from Bradford, Ontario who reached the majors with the Detroit Tigers in 1969 after signing out of high school in 1964 for a then-record bonus for a Canadian amateur. A swingman who worked mostly in relief but could start, he leaned on a sharp curveball and could vary his arm slot from three-quarters to overhand or sidearm. His best season came as a rookie in 1969, when he finished 8-6 with a 3.37 ERA and closed the year with four shutouts over his last nine starts, earning Tigers Rookie of the Year honors. He stayed with Detroit into 1972, then appeared for Oakland, San Diego and Cleveland that same season, one of the few players to play for four teams in a single year. He finished his five-year career in 1973 with a 23-18 record, a 4.43 ERA and 301 strikeouts. Away from the mound, Kilkenny owned harness racehorses and later worked as a golf coach.
