The story on this card

Topps gave Young the wins entry, #477, in the 1973 All-Time Leaders subset, a fourth-series card printed with the Cleveland Indians, though he pitched in Cleveland for the Spiders and the Naps. Walter Johnson, second on the career wins list, finished 94 behind him. Young won 20 or more games in 15 seasons, two more than Christy Mathewson or Warren Spahn.

Cy Young pitched 22 major-league seasons and set career records that still stand for wins (511), losses, games started and complete games. A farm boy from Gilmore, Ohio, who left school after the sixth grade, he reached the majors from Canton of the Tri-State League. He debuted with the Cleveland Spiders on August 6, 1890, beating Chicago 8-1 on three hits. In 1892 he led the National League in wins, ERA and shutouts. The Spiders' owners shifted him to St. Louis in 1899, and in 1901 he jumped to the new American League's Boston club and won the pitching Triple Crown at 33-10. He threw the first pitch of the 1903 World Series, lost that game, and won two more as Boston beat Pittsburgh. He threw no-hitters in 1897, 1904 and 1908. The 1904 game was a perfect game against Rube Waddell and the Athletics, the first in American League history. The 1908 game made him the oldest pitcher to throw a no-hitter, a mark that stood until Nolan Ryan broke it. He finished with a 2.63 ERA and was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1937. The award for the best pitcher each year was named for him in 1956.
