1973 Topps #620 Tommy Harper

About Tommy Harper
Boston finished the 1972 season 85-70, a half-game behind Detroit, in a year that began late because of a work stoppage. Harper, the Red Sox leadoff man, hit .254 with a .341 on-base percentage and 14 home runs. Topps placed him at #620 in the high-number fifth series of its 1973 set. That summer he moved to left field when Carl Yastrzemski went to first base, then hit .342 in July and .320 in August to finish at .281.
Tommy Harper signed with Cincinnati in 1960, scouted by Bobby Mattick, and reached the majors in 1962 as a third baseman before moving to the outfield. Across 15 seasons (1962-1976) with the Reds, Indians, Pilots/Brewers, Red Sox, Angels, Athletics and Orioles he hit .257 with 1,609 hits in 1,810 games. He also hit 146 home runs, drove in 567 runs and stole 408 bases. In 1969 he stole 73 bases for the expansion Seattle Pilots, the most by an American Leaguer since Ty Cobb's 96 in 1915. In 1970 with Milwaukee he became the fifth major leaguer to join the 30-30 club (31 home runs, 38 steals) and made his only All-Star team. He led the league again in 1973 with 54 steals, a Red Sox record that stood until 2009, and was voted the club's Most Valuable Player. Known as "Tailwind Tommy," he later coached for Boston and Montreal and entered the Red Sox Hall of Fame in 2010.
