1973 Topps #619 Billy Wilson

About Billy Wilson
Philadelphia used Wilson in 44 games in 1973, and he went 1-3 with a 6.66 ERA. He saved four games and struck out 24 in 48 2/3 innings, and his last major league game came on September 26. His 1973 Topps card is #619, a high number from the fifth series.
William Harlan Wilson was born September 21, 1942, in Pomeroy, Ohio. A right-handed pitcher who threw and batted right, he stood 6 foot 2 and weighed 195 pounds. Wilson attended Marshall University before signing with the Philadelphia organization in 1962 and spending seven seasons working through its minor league system. He finally made the Phillies' major league roster at the outset of the 1969 season and stayed with the club, always as a reliever, through 1973. Across 179 games he went 9-15 with 17 saves. He posted a 4.22 ERA and 171 strikeouts in 258 innings. In one unusual moment, on August 6, 1971, manager Frank Lucchesi sent him out to play third base for part of an inning against Pittsburgh, putting him on the field against Hall of Famer Willie Stargell. Wilson's entire thirteen-year professional career, 1962 to 1974, was spent in the Phillies organization. He died on August 11, 1993, in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, at age 50.
