About this card

Cards #472-478 cover the 1973 World Series between the Oakland Athletics and the New York Mets one game per card, Games 1 through 7, and #479 "A's Celebrate" closes the run.

The story on this card

Game 1 of the 1973 World Series opened in Oakland with Jon Matlack of the Mets against Ken Holtzman of the Athletics. In the third inning Holtzman doubled and scored when Bert Campaneris's routine grounder bounced between second baseman Felix Millan's legs; Campaneris then stole second and scored on Joe Rudi's single. John Milner's RBI single in the fourth, scoring Cleon Jones, was the only New York run, and Oakland won 2-1. Holtzman got the win, Rollie Fingers and Darold Knowles followed him, and Knowles took the save. Topps put Knowles on #472 in the 1974 set, part of the World Series subset (#472-479), and shows him with Oakland. Knowles appeared in all seven games of the Series, the first pitcher to do so in a seven-game Series.
